Watched the movie, “Pursuit of Happyness” yesterday for the second time. The inspiration this time was so much greater than last time. My situation six years was different and so what I recalled about this movie more than anything else was my appreciation of Will Smith’s acting. This time, I did not notice Will Smith the actor. All I noticed was this character Chris Gardner struggling to get his life going.
You got a dream. You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period.
I have seen this scene multiple times where Will Smith says the above words to his son. This scene is vey prominent in motivational stuff that people post on the internet. As some of you may know, Will Smith’s life and his quotes from movies and interviews, are a great inspiration for many people on the internet. Coming back to this scene, it made it more powerful because of the context. The scene preceding this small speech is as follows.
While playing basketball, the kid makes a basket and says that he is going pro. His dad says that he is going to be average as his dad was average. This causes the kid to hang his head in dejection and stop playing. That’s when the dad realizes that he should not have said those off-hand, dream-quashing remarks. Feeling the remorse, these great words come out of the dad’s mouth. I felt that this was a great moment for parenting advice. Similarly, there were many scenes where parents can get inspired by the patience and love shown by Will Smith’s character in the movie. If you are a parent and have not watched this movie, then I highly recommend this movie.
On a side-note, the main storyline of this movie is how Will Smith tries to land his job as a broker. If you are struggling in your job and have reached a dead-end, then this movie will inspire you to drop all your excuses and find the job that may help you get where you want to go. Overall, an inspiring movie and was worth watching it for the second time after a gap of six or so years.
Thanks for reading and have a great day!
P.S. In future, I am planning to balance my posts on all the seven areas of focus. For the short term, since there is an imbalance in Family, Faith and Financial Freedom in terms of number of posts, I will focus on these three topics this month and the next.
